Mid-Century Modern Midland 3.1

The mission of MCMM is to document, preserve, and perpetuate the Mid-Century Modern architectural heritage of Midland, Michigan. In the early 1930s, Alden B. Dow F.A.I.A. introduced modern design to Midland, Michigan and created over 130 structures during his 50-year career. His innovative and dynamic structures contributed to the initiation of an architectural heritage that stands as exceptional in the United States.

Dow’s creative concepts were influential to numerous architects, among them Jackson Hallett A.I.A, Glenn Beach A.I.A., Robert Schwartz A.I.A, and Francis “Red” Warner A.I.A. They and other talented architects crafted Mid-Century Modern structures that are now an essential component of more than 400 buildings in Midland. The documentation of each structure and the narrative behind this remarkable body of work will enrich Michigan’s design heritage and honor the creators who introduced new perspectives and solutions in design and architecture.
